Brief Description: The objectives that were addressed in this lesson plan were as follows: Predicting the weight of each pumpkin, Predicting the number of seeds in each pumpkin, Putting the groups predictions in spreadsheet form, and drawing conclusions from the information in the spreadsheet.
The groups used Spreadsheets and bar graphs which addressed the technology portion of the lesson plan.
As you have already gathered, the students were put into groups, each group had to collect information. The above objectives explain what that information was. Once their predictions were recorded, they then had to weigh the pumpkins and cut open the pumpkins and count the seeds. They had to write this information on the front of their pumpkins. They would then gather their findings and enter their predictions and facts onto the spreadsheet. The students would use their spread sheet as a comparison tool with their predictions. They used two graphs one for the weight and one for the number of seeds. They were able to draw conclusions from these graphs. The teacher then presented all of the groups results on an overhead and they were able to discuss as a class whether bigger pumpkins always had more seeds.
How would I adapt this project to my grade level and discipline?
Well, my plan is to be an art teacher, so I could integrate the seed counting into several different art projects. I would eliminate he weighing part of the pumpkin, but still include and the prediction of the number of seeds in each pumpkin. The use of technology would come in when I would ask my student to go online and find different ways to decorate or carve their pumpkins. They I would have them go online to find different ways they could artistically use their dried pumpkins seed. This would serve as four different lesson plans.
Day one would be the research, Day two would be the cleaning of the pumpkins and the decorating of the pumpkins. I would collect all of the seeds, take them home and dry them out, I then would have the seeds laid out for the third lesson plan and they would choose three different colors. The seeds would then be spray painted or hand painted with all of the colors chosen. Previous to the fourth lesson plan we would gather as a group and decide which project out of all the ones found we would do with the pumpkins seeds. Already of course having a plan of my own to contribute. My plan would to do a large mosaic with the pumpkins seeds. We would maybe choose the school logo, or something to do with that time of year. We could still include a small guessing game to guess the number of seeds in the pumpkins and have a prize for whomever was the closest. That would make things interesting. This one projects would take care of several lesson;s perhaps covering a months worth of lessons.
Pretty cool project!!
